Hi-tech uniform underway for military soldiers

To lessen the devastating impact of war, especially on human lives, the Korean Ministry of National Defense has endeavored to bring the subtleties of technological innovations to military operations.

With the aim to modernize and transform the Korean military into a technology-based structure, the armed forces have plans to develop a high-tech bulletproof helmet furnished with subminiature cameras and computer systems by the year 2020.

At an exhibition in Seoul on February 27, the ministry revealed samples for the new military outfit.

To be completed in two phases, the military set off by attaching headsets and video transmission devices to bulletproof helmets by 2016. It will then initiate with the task of installing Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment and other long-distance communication network system by 2020.

The helmet will make use of high density polyethylene, weighing only 1,150 grams and protecting against bullets fired from distance as close as one or two meters away. This apart, battle dress uniform with the system to deflect infrared rays from opponent's surveillance system, is also under development.

The uniform will largely include polyester and rayon fabrics and further external pads will be supplied to protect knees and elbows. Combat boots, to prevent the penetration of biological and radiological particles, cold-weather clothing and bulletproof vests will also be provided.
