Although the handicraft industry of Algeria has evinced exports worth US $5 million, unofficial figures show an additional export of goods valued at $10 million by unauthorized parallel activities.

In a press conference held on March 2, the Minister of Small and Medium sized companies, and Handicraft Industry stated that the figures for export value have touched $15 million.

However, the minister also confirmed that the statistics was not accurate and that the additional sum has been generated from the activities of workers not registered with the Handicraft Industry Chambers.

The confusion was mainly a result of difficulties faced while transferring registration operations in 1998, from the City Halls to the Handicraft Industry Chambers. It was during this period that enrollment of a large number of workers could not be effectively done.

Further, in order to attract global buyer, Algerian Government is organising the 14th International Handicraft Exhibition, which will commence tomorrow and will extend till March 9.

Around 300 local handicraft artisans will participate in the event to exhibit their products, while more than 5o countries have been invited to be a part of the event.
