The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), strongly believes that setting up of Indian textile industries in Botswana to enhance economy and generate employment will not be feasible, at least for the while.

During the twenty-fifth edition of Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair (IHGF), which opened on February 28, in New Delhi, Mr Rakesh Verma, Joint Director of EPCH, stated that small scale operation in any country would not allow the achievement of the objectives. Besides, it would involve a huge risk factor.

However, the Council has intentions of establishing a base in one of the South African countries for promoting the sale of Indian textile goods.

Presently, EPCH is only focusing on key markets like the US and Europe where a lot of Indian products are sold because of huge demand.

Although, Government provides subsidies to local producers motivating them to partake in international fairs, the council sends exporters only to South Africa.

The Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair is being conducted for six days and was inaugurated by Shankarsinh Vaghela, Union Textile Minister. The event provides a platform to the exporters to showcase Indian handicrafts and attract foreign buyers.

During the official opening ceremony of IHGF, Mr Vaghela stated that the fair enables small entrepreneurs to expand their business, create employment in the handicrafts sector as well as improve the living standard of the large number of artisans engaged in the sector across the country.

Among a host of items displayed here, the fair highlighted on fashion jewellery, Christmas decorations, furniture, home textiles and general decoration handicrafts.
