Western Wool Indicator remains unchanged at 956¢

When looked at in other currencies, the AWEX EMI decreased by 8¢ (-0.9%) in US terms and by 9¢ (-1.6%) in Euro terms when compared with the previous sale.
The market opened on a firm basis with the medium and strong Merino wools picking up, particularly in the South. Fine wools eased in the North after two weeks of gains. Although the EMI came back on Wednesday, the medium and broad Merino wools held their ground.
Average AWEX Micron Price Guides (MPGs) were up by 5¢ clean for 16.5 microns, down by 3¢ for 17.0 microns, by 8¢ for 17.5 microns, by 7¢ for 18.0 microns, by 10¢ for 18.5 microns, by 7¢ for 19.0 microns and by 17¢ for 19.5 microns. The 20.0 micron wool average MPG was up by 4¢ clean, 21.0 microns by 10¢, 22.0 microns by 8¢, 23.0 microns by 11¢, and 24.0 microns by 13¢.
Better skirting types were firm on Tuesday, whereas all types eased on Wednesday. Oddments were generally cheaper again this week, with the average Merino Cardings MPG falling by 21¢. Crossbreds were up on Tuesday, but down on Wednesday to finish unchanged or slightly down for the week.
Buyers for China were dominant followed by those buying for India and Europe.
Sales will be in recess next week and resume in the week commencing 31 March (Week 40), when 69,000 bales are currently rostered for sale in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle. Present estimates for the following two sales are 49,300 and 53,100 bales respectively.
The National Wool Production Forecasting Committee met in Melbourne yesterday. The results of their deliberations will be announced later Thursday 20 March.
