Handicraft expo helps artisans make huge profits

The Gramshree Mela in Jamshedpur came to a booming end yesterday by breaking the sale record of last 16 years. The fair is organized by Council for Advancement of People's Action and Rural Technology (CAPART), the autonomous body under the Union Ministry, in association with Tata Steel.

The artisans from various parts of nation gathered here to display their wide range of products. The stalls showcased jute products, carpets, cotton garments, cane furniture, dolls and decorative items. It is estimated that, the craftsmen have earned more than Rs65 lakh from their active participation in the expo.

As summer has approached the stalls of cotton cloths enjoyed maximum crowd. The beautiful embroidery done on kurtis got highly appreciated and were soon picked up by the visitors.

The hand-woven carpets in interesting designs and colours left onlookers speechless. Cane furniture from Assam was a sudden success among spectators. The bright puppets from Rajasthan became popular with children.

One of the main reasons for holding handicraft exhibition is to help the artisans financially and make regional art and craft famous nation wide.
