In 2007, the entire cotton production of China reached nearly 7.5 million tons, out of it Xinjiang region contributed 2.7 million, making it more than one third of total national output.

Although the cotton production in the entire world has come down to merely 26.1 million tons, yield of Xinjiang still adds around one tenth to the global output.
Every year more than 6,00,000 people come to Xinjiang for picking up cotton and earn their living.
According to available statistics, China has 150 million cotton farmers and over 13 million people making their living from working in cotton textile and garment industries.
Textile products have been the second largest revenue generator for China for a long time. The country is also largest producer and consumer of cotton in the world.
