PetroquímicaSuape starts earthmoving on PTA industry

PetroquímicaSuape started the earthmoving for the construction of the purified terefthalic acid (PTA) plant, to be built at Suape, in Ipojuca. The first tractors arrived on Monday (1/7) and are already working. The job is being executed by Lidermac Construções e Equipamentos Ltda. and will be finished until May 7th, 2008.

PetroquímicaSuape's CEO, Richard Ward, announced the work's beginning to Fernando Bezerra Coelho, Economic Development Secretary of Pernambuco.

Despite some federal and state tributary pending issues, the Company decided to start the earthmoving, because of the difficulties that the rain period represents. The new PetroquimicaSuape's schedule foresees the building construction to start in April, with the piling.

PetroquímicaSuape is part of a sequence of investments made by Petrobras Química S/A (Petroquisa) and Companhia Integrada Têxtil do Nordeste (Citene), in order to structure a polyester chain in Brazil, that will be able to offer textile industries the conditions to face Asian competition. PTA is the main raw material used for polyester production.

PetroquímicaSuape's industry will adopt the most modern technology and will be able to produce 640 thousand tons per year, similar to world's biggest plants in operation. US$ 632 million will be invested and the pre-operation is foreseen to the 2nd semester of 2009.

During construction stage, the Company will create about 3.000 jobs and about 1.800 on construction peak. The operation will originate 500 jobs, between PetroquímicaSuape and contractors. In both stages the Company will give preference to the contraction of people from the region.
