Cultural festival is the best way to celebrate the rich and vibrant lifestyle of a particular tribe that has kept its values intact. On the same lines, a six day Cholistan Festival, which began on May 6, is being organized by Alhamra Art Council (AAC), Lahore.

The aim behind organizing this fest is to highlight the mannerism of desert people living in Cholistan. A series of events and performances including folk dances, songs, puppet shows and plays by artists hailing from the region are scheduled to make city people aware about tribal traditions.

To showcase exclusive and interesting handicraft, the craftsmen have put up stalls that include typical Cholistani items like dresses, shawls, silver jewellary, ivory bangles, footwear that is attracting spectators.

The special embroidery that the region is famous for, is generating lot of interest among visitors. The wall hangings, decorative pieces, hand woven carpets, bed covers, blankets and bags that are beautifully designed from colourful threads by using several styles like Flassi, Gindi, Changaries, and Khalti which are receiving great response for the onlookers.

The word 'Cholistan' is derived from cholna, that means moving. The Cholistanis lead a semi-nomadic life by moving from one place to another in search of water and fodder for their animals. Organising such events is the best way to promote the otherwise remote and secluded tribal life.
