De Montfort University has a history of involvement with the textile trade going back to 1870. The provision provided there for textile and fashion students is evolving through collaborative programmes and initiatives with industry partners.

Partnerships with the BWMB and NEXT are two new partnerships that the college recently announced at their Textile Showcase event in London.

Lyndsey Chambers, Programme Leader for Textile Design at DMU is very enthusiastic about the project.

“The textile design students and the staff here are looking forward to working with the BWMB to explore the potential of British Wool as an innovative surface suitable for fashion.

The students will be working with wool and combinations of other materials with wool to explore the diversity and broaden the perceptions of how wool can be used.”

The BWMB is keen not to limit the student's creativity and want to see how they use it; there will be no restriction on the amount of British Wool used or on the technique.

“Ultimately we want to present an opportunity to see what is possible with British Wool. There are already great things being done with our wool by small, independent designers -particularly ethical designers.

Many of them are taking a challenging fibre and making really stunning clothing. We want to see more of that talent.” Explained Poole.
