Recently, Tianjing city's agriculture department successfully developed a new specie of cotton in Hainan island, which is called the 'transgenic cotton'.

The cultivation of this breed has already begun, with the local Government starting off with area of of 400 mus in Tianjing city.

China is the biggest cotton producer in the world, with planting areas making up of about 20 percent of the global cotton planting areas.

However, Chinese cotton lacks in quality when compared to that of some developed countries, resulting in considerably lower exports. Hence, analysts believe that it is essential for China to produce high quality transgenic cotton species with self-owned intellectual property.

This new specie is just a small step in this direction. The experts of China Agriculture University and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences have been roped in to guide in the process personally.

Tianjing city has also announced that it plans to actively set up a base to study the new species of cotton within next 5 years.
