Ethylene production in Japan dropped significantly in May due to shutdown of three naphtha fed steam cracker which went in for regular maintenance.
Sources from Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry informed Fibre2fashion that ethylene production in May dropped by about 7.6 percent compared to last year to 594,400 metric tons. However, on a month on month basis, the overall Asian production for the chemical rose by 4.3 percent.
Two of the three naphtha cracker which went for maintenance belonged to Mitsubishi Chemical.
While the company's cracker at Mizushima with a capacity of producing 450,000 metric ton per year of ethylene will remain closed from May 15 till June 4, the other at Kashima producing 375,000 metric tons shut on May 13 and will restart only after July 1.
The third cracker belonging to Maruzen Petrochemical and producing around 550,000 metric tons of ethylene shuttered on May 11 and will remain so till June 22.
