Exporters aim at securing rights to operate from residential areas

Small and medium scale exporters based in Delhi have decided to meet Shiela Dikshit today demanding that trade operations other than manufacturing activities should be permitted to function in residential areas of the city.

This decision was taken after fashion designers were granted permission by the Government to function from within the residential areas in the capital and therefore exempting them from the ongoing sealing operations. Exporters also demanded for similar grants.

It has been estimated that more than 2,000 traders engaged in exports of handicraft, handcrafted garments, embroidery, leather items and various other items will be severely affected if their activities are sealed.

Exporters based their demand on grounds that their activities does not either pollute or use extra electricity or cause traffic jams in the residential areas and hence there is no reason why exporters must not be granted similar exemptions from sealing operations.

Moreover, exporters are already going through a tough phase due to recent rupee appreciation which has resulted in drooping exports of handicraft, especially carpets and leather products.

Although a large number of exporters have shifted their base from residential areas to Noida, a major problem facing most of them is that of high property prices which is squeezing their profit margins. Exporters are hopeful that if fashion designers have been given such privileges by the Government, they would also be able to pacify the authorities for securing the same.
