UV Standard 801 label for Sun Protective Textiles

A new label will in future inform retailers and consumers of the UV protection factor (UPF) of awnings and sunshades in accordance with UV Standard 801.

The label augments the UV Standard 801 symbol, which since 1998 has been used to indicate the UPF factor primarily of clothing tested in accordance with UV Standard 801. This internationally recognised testing method takes into account the special demands placed on sun protection textiles during use.

When garments are worn, the fabric is stretched, exposed to moisture from perspiration or seawater, and subject to wear and tear, which all have an impact on UPF. The UPF of materials used for shading textiles can be severely compromised by weathering and wear and tear during use over time.

In contrast to other methods of measurement, the UV Standard 801 takes these factors into account during laboratory tests. As a result, they provide reliable values approaching those seen in a product that has been used and maintained.
