With an additional seven single buoy moorings (SBMs), Gujarat is likely to emerge as a leading oil refinery hub of the world and since Reliance and Adani Groups are pioneering this project, the proposition may turn into a reality in a just another four years.

For enhancing imports through very large crude carriers (VLCC), giant players like Reliance, Adani, Essar, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Bharat Oman Refinery are planning to install SBMs which are essentially an unloading platform in the ocean that facilitates oil transfer to coast and then to the refinery through land pipeline.

Government officials have revealed the likelihood of having seven additional SBMs along the coast of Gujarat to the existing seven operating in the state.

Of these, Reliance has proposed to set up three at Sikka and another one at Hazira port which will be an addition to its three already existing SBMs in Gujarat. The company will be investing some Rs12,000 millions in Sikka and Rs3,000 million at Hazira.

Adani Group has also expressed the desire to set up two more SBMs with an investment of Rs10,000 million. The seventh one is likely to come from Bharat Oman Refinery which plans to invest Rs5,000 million for the project.
