Guangdong Province, the biggest textile exporting region of China has witnessed a continuous drop in its exports this year and as a result local markets witnessed a slow demand for cotton.
According to the statistics revealed by Guangzhou customs, in the first five months of this year, the province imported 36,000 tons of cotton, down by 18.1 percent from the same period last year.
The total cotton import made by Guangdong in the month of May declined by 46.8 percent compared to April whereas the overall quantity imported by China from January to May summed up to 1.03 million tons, up by 11.7 percent.
Exports from Guangdong Province on the other hand saw a drop of 13.6 percent to touch $12.21 billion in the same period. The country on the whole exported textile goods worth $26.07 billion, up by 26.3 percent.
With textile exports showing a downward trend cotton imports have also shown a relative drop. If the situation remains unchanged, it is difficult to see the province retaining its reputation of being a leading textile exporting region of China.
