Exports of polyester chips plunges in May

Customs statistics show that China exported 95,502 tons of polyester chips in May 2008, recording a plunge of 8,338 tons or 8.03 percent from April. However, this also represents a year-on-year increase of 8.87 percent.
Of these exports of PET registered 83,489 tons, 5.79 percent less than April, but 36.46 percent higher than the same time last year. Export of other polyester chips reached 12,013 tons, 21.08 percent down from that in April, and 54.74 percent lower than the same time last year.
Average export price of polyester chip in May stood within the range of US $1,406 per ton, up 2.69 percent from the previous month, and registering a rise of 14.96 percent from the same period last year.
Of these, the average price of PET bottle exports was at $1,400 per ton, up 3.46 percent from the previous month. This also represented a 14.67 percent year-on-year growth.
Average export price of other polyester chips ranged around $1,445 per ton, down 1.02 percent from April, but up 17.75 percent from the same time last year.
From January to May, China's total exports of polyester chips reached 445,394 tons, a growth of 7.58 percent over the same period last year.
Of these, export of high-viscosity polyester chips touched 378,609 tons, a year-on-year increase of 36.99 percent, while exports of other polyester chips marked 66,785 tons, with a slide of 51.48 percent compared to 2007.
During the first five months, the average export price of polyester chips was at $1,365 per ton, a year-on-year rise of 13.81 percent. Among all, export price of high-viscosity polyester chips stood around $1,351 per ton, a year-on-year growth of 12.75 percent.
