The fourth day of the India International Garment Fair saw many dignitaries visit the show. Mrs Dorcas A Kgosietsile, High Commissioner of Botswana visited the Fair and was impressed with its scale and variety. Botswana is part of the South African Custom Union (SACU), which is in the process of working out a FTA with India.
SACU is the oldest customs union in the world. It was established in 1910. Among the SACU countries, Indian garment exporters presently have a good presence in South Africa. But many of the other SACU countries are still to be well explored. She said that Botswana could be a market for cotton summer collections of India, as cotton is a preferred fiber there. The fourth day of the India International Garment Fair saw many dignitaries visit the show. Over the four days, around 668 overseas buyers and 300 buying agents visited the IIGF. The largest number of buyers came from USA. The fair saw over 100 buyers from USA. It was followed by UK, Spain, Japan, France, Turkey, Italy, Canada, Australia and Hong Kong, in that order. These countries are also the major destinations for India’s apparel exports.
It may be noted that in 2007-08, the increase in India’s exports was mainly in the European Union countries as exports to the second largest market, USA stagnated. Among the EU countries, the major destinations were UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Exports to UK and Germany saw a significant growth of over 20% whereas exports dipped for Italy by 13.76% and Canada by 12.63%.
