Seasonally adjusted exports increased by 7% in May relative to April 2008 and imports increased by 3%. Relative to March 2008, exports in April decreased by 4%, while imports decreased by 9%.
On an unadjusted basis, the value of exports in May 2008 shows no change on May 2007, while the value of imports is down 11%. The value of exports in April 2008 was down 2% on April 2007 and the value of imports was up 1%.
The January-April figures for 2008 when compared with those of 2007 show that:
Exports decreased from €30,179m to €28,927m (-4%) –
• Chemical materials increased by 47%, Electrical machinery by 5% and Petroleum products by 79%.
• Goods to Switzerland decreased by 35%, the Netherlands by 18%, Belgium by 2%, Germany by 9% and the Philippines by 50%. Goods to China increased by 38%, Malaysia by 91%, Singapore by 13%, Spain by 7%, Russia by 20% and Poland by 39%. Imports decreased from €21,505m to €20,533m (-5%) –
• Goods from China decreased by 15%, Taiwan by 32%, Japan by 15%, the United States by 13%, Germany by 4% and Norway by 37%. Goods from Libya increased from €28m to €81m (+188%), Denmark by 17%, Poland by 43%, the Netherlands by 9% and Russia by 140%.
