Barclay Butera brings signature residential approach to hospitality ventures

Lifestyle designer Barclay Butera's highly-regarded style of casual elegance with a contemporary twist, his national acclaim, and respectful makeovers of homes with a Hollywood legacy earned him recognition by L'Auberge Del Mar's parent company, Destination Hotels & Resorts, as a premier luxury residential designer.

Butera was selected as Creative Director for the $25M renovation of luxury hotel L'Auberge Del Mar. His mission was to bring a fresh approach with an air of sophistication to the 120-room resort located in Del Mar, CA, that overlooks the Pacific Ocean, and reopened June 2008.

"I consider this project a great opportunity to showcase my work in the hospitality industry, and I look forward to being a significant force in hotel design," states Butera CEO of Barclay Butera Inc.

Butera oversaw every aspect from exterior colors and landscaping, to the main entrance; from the front desk, lobby seating arrangement, to hardwood floors, water features, cabana details, etc.

Working directly with the architect, landscaper, and contractor resulted in a harmonious environment that 90%+ incorporates Butera's branded collections.

The lobby is entirely furnished in Barclay Butera Home furniture and textiles, as are the common areas, and 120 hotel rooms themselves, dramatically different from most hotel rooms.

A color palette of mossy greens and chocolates is highlighted, along with signature Butera animal and abstract prints. Textures include velvet, mohair, woven silk, wool, and crisp bed linen.

Accessories are by Barclay Butera Home, including picture frames, vases, pillows, and bedding. The contiguous feel he created is that of walking into a grand estate and its bedrooms.

Transitional with a contemporary twist is Butera's specialty; embracing the indoor/outdoor concept adds a soothing element, enhanced with water and fire elements. Ground floor rooms surrounding the pool area extend outdoors via cabanas.

This design also evokes the hotel's original Hollywood era and history, when Bing Crosby, Lucille Ball and Pat O'Brien graced the area, particularly while visiting Del Mar Fairgrounds and Racetrack ("Where the Surf Meets the Turf").

This renovation marks Butera's first major hospitality project. He has worked with the St. Regis New York, and is working on a large commercial project in Mexico City, as well as working toward additional significant hospitality projects.
