The fiscal year July-June 2008 saw Bangladesh earning US $14.110 billion in export revenues of which apparels alone managed to account for $10.69 billion. The industry has set for itself an ambitious target of touching $25 billion by 2010.
The US accounts for a quarter of the world's total textile and apparel imports. US textile imports, a third of which come from China, were worth $96.4 billion during 2007. India's exports to the US in comparision was $5.1 billion in 2007.
India also stands the ignominy of being pushed to the 4th place in exports of apparels to the US by Vietnam in 2008 if the current pace of exports is maintained by that country. The country plans to hit revenues of $6.1 billion in exports of apparels to US in 2008. Current ranking is China, followed by Mexico, India and Vietnam.
The Indian textile industry has a legacy, going back by more than 100 years. However smaller countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam have been able to compete tooth and nail with India in the international markets to claim their share of the apparel pie
The Indian textile and garment industry has its own set of competitiveness, but will have to do a lot more if it wants to stay ahead of its Asian neighbors', who are steadily gnawing at its global market share.
