The Agriculture Department of Punjab has urged farmers to prevent 'Lushkari' pest attack on cotton crops, and as a measure, has suggested an early spray of pesticide to check its spread.
Lushkari pest can cause serious damage to cotton crop as it attacks the leaves and stems the growth of the crop. The only remedy, as recommended by the department, is a timely spray for eradicating the pest at its early stage of attack because at an advanced stage, it would be quite expensive to save and control the crops from destruction.
Certain other measures have also been suggested like removing of affected leaves and burying it in the soil to prevent its spread to other crops through the wind. In severe cases, farmers have been asked to spray 'Lefineuran' 150-200ml, Thyodrakarb 480 gram and Chloropyriphos 1000-1250 ml per acre.
Pakistan in anyways facing a shortage of cotton due to declining acreage, increasing cost of inputs and various other reasons, and if the remaining produce is damaged by pests, it will be a big blow to the textile industry at large.
