Zhejiang silk goods exports show shining results

According to customs statistics, from January to July 2008, Zhejiang silk product exports reached US $3.15 billion, an increase of 12.85 percent from the same time last year, accounting for 58 percent of entire industry's exports.

Of these, real silk merchandise exports registered $890 million, a year-on-year rise of 0.9 percent, and synthetic silk exports fetched $2.26 billion marking an increase of 18.37.

Exports of silk fabrics showed surge, both, in price and volume. Silk fabric exports stood at 2.51 billion meters, worth $2.42 billion, growing 7.7 percent and 18.0 percent, respectively, as compared to same time lat year. Average unit price was around $0.97 per meter, up 10.16 percent.

Among these, exports of chemical fiber silk fabrics scored 2.46 billion meters at $2.26 billion, representing a rise of 7.0 percent and 18.4 percent, respectively.

Average unit price was around $0.92 per meter, with a climb of 10.6 percent, as against same period of 2007. Thus, these products accounted for 93.2 percent of the total amount of silk fabric exports.

During the period, silk satin exports came up to 50 million meters, worth $165 million, representing a year-on-year rise of 11.6 percent and 12.9 percent, respectively. Average unit price stood around $3.33 per meter, up slightly by 1.14 percent from the same time last year.

Exports of silk garments and other manufactured goods declined. Exports of silk manufactured products registered $614 million, a year-on-year decline of 4.07 percent. Of these, silk garment exports were 34.6 million sets, worth $466 million, down 18.93 percent and 7.05 percent from the same time last year.

The main export markets were the EU at $573 million, marking a year-on-year boost of 15.1 percent, United Arab Emirates at $285 million, up 8.3 percent and the ASEAN at $276 million, with a growth of 28.3 percent. Though exports to the US recorded a decline of almost 12.3 percent, it was still one of the key markets at $337 million. These four major markets together accounted for 46.7 percent of the total exports.

In addition, exports to Africa, Pakistan, Ukraine, Russia, Vietnam and other markets maintained a high growth-rate with average of nearly 30 percent.
