Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), a leading research company has claimed to have discovered an effective alternative solution to the problem of mulesing sheep.
Sources from the company informed Fibre2fashion that the method, called fly strike treatment, was still being tested on a trial basis and that AWI is expecting to get patents from the Government in a couple of weeks time.
So far a number of alternatives had been put on trial but without any overriding success because of the constant demonstrations posted by the animal welfare groups.
However, AWI has finally managed to breakthrough all the barriers and has avowed that the new technology that uses two related injectable compounds will be a viable option to mulesing and will be ready for commercial release next year before 2010 deadline to phase out mulesing.
The tests have shown very encouraging results and experts hope that it would really do well to replace mulesing, yet allowing convenient shearing of fleeces. AWI is confident that with approvals from the Government for a few more trials, they would be successful in demonstrating the outcome to the industry as well.
