Cotton production projected to fall in 2008-09

However the US, which was once considered the cotton producing bowl of the world, has seen the fortunes of its cotton industry dipping with each passing year. US produced 5.06 million tons in cotton year 2004/05 but expected to slip to 4.18 million tons in 2007/08 and is projected to fall further to 3.00 million tons in 2008/09.
Cotton consumption on the other hand has witnessed a growth in cotton year 2007/08 when referred to those of 2004/05, but has again actually seen stagnancy in the year 2007/08 when compared with figures of cotton year 2006/07.
Cotton utilization stood at 23.69 million tons in 2004/05, rose to 25.03 million tons in 2005/06, again increased to 26.68 million tons in 2006/07 and is expected to fall in 2007/08 to touch 26.55 million tons and is predicted to decrease further to 26.25 million tons in 2008.
The Chinese textile bandwagon consumed the highest amount of cotton compared to any country in the world and accounted for as much as 41 percent of world consumption in 2007/08. The utilization of cotton of China has increased from 8.30 million tons in 2004/05 to 11.01 million tons in 2007/08.
India stood second in terms of cotton use by growing from 3.26 million tons in 2004/05 to 4.05 million tons in 2007/08 and is expected to stay the same in the current as well as next year.
The other major consumer of cotton is Pakistan, unfortunately has seen utilization stay stagnant in the last 4 years. Its use which was 2.32 million tons in 2004/05 has grown to only 2.57 million tons in 2007/08 but is expected to fall in 2008 and 2009.
