According to Government statistics cotton planting area in Henan Province is about 10.80 million mus for 2008-2009. This is similar to that of previous year.
However, sources say that land under cotton irrigation has actually shrunk in the Province. Infact, in Zhoukou District alone the acreage has dropped around 10 percent.
Experts say that cotton growing is extremely hard and since prices are low it doesn't profit farmers much. Thus, many farmers have moved on to more feasible crops.
On the other hand, many farmers who were struggling to make good income, finally gave up and sought jobs in other cities and provinces.
Besides, analysts say that the local cotton's quality is not good, and most of it fails to meet even 3-grade cotton national standards.
There is not much trading activity because cotton sellers are holding their produce in the hope that prices might go up. The current purchasing price of seed cotton is about 6.50 yuan per kilogram.
