The Fiber Industry Development Authority (FIDA) takes the lead in coordinating the activities for the "International Year of the Fibres" (IYNF) in 2009.

In a recent meeting with the various fiber industry sectors, Administrator Cecilia Gloria Soriano gave a presentation on the celebration of the "International Year of the Natural Fibres" (IYNF) in 2009 citing the background, objectives and world activities of this event.

Administrator Soriano enjoined a strong country representation since the Philippines is the world's top producer of abaca fibre and believes that focusing world attention on the role that income derived from the sale and export of natural fibres will contribute to food security and poverty alleviation of the global population.

The FIDA Chief also presented the FIDA's proposed activities in the national and regional levels.

After the presentation, the IYNF-FIDA Chairman Josephine Regalado discussed the Multi-Sectoral Proposed Activities including the schedule, location and proponent/s for each activity.

As agreed by the group, the activities include: 1) Trade Exhibits featuring the Philippine natural fibres and Silk, Piña and Abaca Festivals; 2) Conferences/summits/forums; 3) Abaca Week Celebration; 4) Fashion Show; 5) Essay Writing Contest and Poster Making Contest; 6) "Gawad Hibla 2009" Search; 7) Fibre Museum & Documentaries; 8) Attempt to set world record for Longest Twine or Rope; 9) Information Caravan; and, 10) Furniture and Home Décor/Unique Fibre Product Design Contest.

Committees were also created for the proposed activities for the IYNF- national level as follows: (1) Exhibits; (2) Promotions and Publicity; (3) Conference; and, (4) Awards.
