As far as the local outlook is concerned, the 8th estimate for the 2007/08 production year indicates a total crop of 53520 lint bales which is 2% up from last month's estimate but 4% down from the previous season. It is the smallest crop in more than 40 years mainly due to the perception that cotton farming is no longer a viable option especially in view of the more favourable prices of other competing summer crops.
Cotton faces stiff competition from crops such as maize and sunflower where soaring prices offer farmers greater profitability whilst requiring less management inputs. About 52230 lint bales are estimated to be produced from RSA produced seed cotton, 4% down from the previous season. The balance of 1290 lint bales relates to expected seed cotton purchases by a local gin from Botswana and by the Swaziland gin from Swaziland.
