The textile ministry is contemplating setting up of “Centre of Excellence” in various categories of the most happening sector in textiles; technical textiles.

Towards that end, Synthetic and Art Silk Mills' Research Association (Sasmira) has been designated as a Centre of Excellence for Agro-textiles. The centre will be set up in alliance with MANTRA, Surat and Navsari Agriculture University in Navsari as associate partners and IIT, Delhi as knowledge partner.

The vision behind the 'CoE' is to turn 'Sasmira' in to a world class leading service driven and research based international technical textile association to serve the industry in general and agriculture sector in particular.

The mission behind creating the 'CoE' is to create awareness regarding agro-textile products amongst farmers and to increase productivity and guiding them in protecting their crops.

The 'CoE' will also assist in early harvesting along with providing soil covering systems and controlling irrigation using agro-textiles.

There would also be a provision for state of art testing certification facilities and also assist budding entrepreneurs in the field of agro-textiles.

Among the facilities to be set up is a demonstration pilot plant facility. Other facilities apart from the pilot plant are an accredited testing and evaluation center, an information centre to guide on agro-textiles and a training centre.
