Despite a marginal drop in acreage this Kharif season, cotton traders in the state are hopeful about procuring higher cotton output in 2008-09. Cotton production in Gujarat is expected to increase to 12 million bales this season as against 11 million bales yielded in 2007-08.

Experts believe that monsoon pattern this year has been quiet favorable for cotton crop. This apart, the recent spell of heavy rains in the state last week also did not affect the crop in a big way.

An official from Sherman Corporation told Fibre2fashion, “Heavy rains have raised the expectation of yield to 12 million bales but if the weather does not remain favorable in the coming weeks, output may decline by 30 percent. More rain in the days to come may lead to huge losses in Amreli and Surendranagar.”

Cotton acreage in Saurashtra region is around 16 lakh hectares and heavy rains is estimated to have damaged only 2 to 3 percent of acreage in the region and unlike last year, the yield is likely to improve on account of favorable weather conditions.

Area under cotton cultivation in 2007-08 stood at 25 lakh hectares, which plummeted marginally to 24.11 lakh hectares in 2008-09. However, cotton acreage has been higher as compared to average area under cotton crop in Gujarat. The average cotton acreage in the state is pegged at 22.68 lakh hectares.

However, it needs to be mentioned that though cotton acreage in Gujarat has increased in 2007-08, the yield was not as impressive as was expected. In the meanwhile, prices of Shankar-6 cotton variety also witnessed an easing of prices in the wake of new cotton arrivals in the market.
