The province of Gujarat in India is considered one of the major cotton growing belts in India and Sankar-6 variety of long staple cotton grown in the state is widely accepted by textile enterprises in the country along with which it commands a very high export potential too.

According to a cotton trader from Gujarat, Mr Arun Dalal “In the previous year, overall exports of cotton from India stood at 8.5 million bales out of which Gujarat contributed about 4.3 million.”

Looking at the overall potential of the quality of cotton grown in Gujarat, National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Ltd (NCDEX) has big time plans for the white gold.

The exchange is planning to go in for a branding exercise for the cotton produced in Gujarat under the brand name of “Gold Circle” to enable the cotton to generate the right price it deserves in the global markets.

Cotton is sold as a commodity worldwide. But In face of branding exercises as done in the case of American cotton varieties like Supima, the cotton grown in Gujarat, in spite of having similar qualities is not able to command the price it is worthy of due to which it is sold at a discount in international markets in contrast with prices of comparable US grown varieties.

This is a first of its kind exercise in India and if all goes well, other cotton varieties grown in the country can also be expected to be branded on similar lines in near future.
