The Government of Gujarat is organizing the 4th Global Investors' Summit on 12-13 January 2009. Aimed at bringing together business leaders, investors, corporations, thought leaders, policy and opinion makers; the summit serves as a perfect platform to understand and explore business opportunities in the state of Gujarat.

A biennial event, Vibrant Gujarat: Global Investors' Summit has had resounding successes in the past attracting several companies from Asia and Europe to establish their presence in Gujarat. The 2003 Global Investors' Summit was held coinciding with the glorious Navratri Festival where a total of 76 MOUs worth USD 14 billion were signed.

The 2005 Summit saw signing of 226 MOUs garnering an investment of USD 20 billion. The year 2007 Summit, attended by industry majors like Tata, Birla, Reliance, Shell, General Motors, ICICI to name a few resulted in signing of 675 MOUs worth USD 152 billion.

In the year 2009, the initiative that began six years ago, will be intensified and the state shall propel in to the next stage of the development process focused and intensive growth in the socio-economic index.

Gujarat has a glorious and worthy of mention textile industry. Ahmedabad, the biggest city of Gujarat has been fondly referred to as “Manchester of the East” and denim capital of India. The textile industry contributes as much as 6 percent to the industrial production of the state. Surat is considered the strongest base for polyester related products in the country.

Gujarat has also to its credit the largest number of multi-head embroidery machines in the world (over 40,000) installed in last 3 years in Surat alone

Gujarat accounts for 12 percent of all textile exports from the country and also has the largest denim capacity in India and is number-3 across the globe. It is also counted among the largest producer of cotton; 35 percent and also the largest exporter of cotton; 60 percent in India. Over 95 percent of all powerloom manufacturers in India are based in Gujarat.

The textile industry in Gujarat is spread across the whole value chain i.e. from petrochemicals to garments. The state is also home to renowned education and research institutes associated with the sector like National Institute of Design (NID), Man-made Textile Research Association (MANTRA), Ahmedabad Textile Research Association (ATIRA) among many.

The state has a well developed infrastructure for the industry consisting of 18 product clusters, 5 dedicated Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and 6 industrial parks.

The opportunities for the future are many in the state. To name a few; modern energy efficient textile processing, garment manufacturing, technical textiles and innumerable prospects in collaborations for technology transfer and acquisitions.
