Deltapine tops amongst most widely planted cotton seeds

Based on informal surveys made by Cotton Program Classing Offices, Deltapine brand of cottonseed was the most widely planted in the US in cotton season 2008-09. Fibermax, Stoneville, PhytoGen, Americot, All-Tex and Dyna-Gro followed in that order.
Those surveyed included the likes of seed dealers, ginners and other reliable sources. Genetically modified seeds which are resistant to worms and other diseases accounted for more than 90 percent of cotton seed planted.
Some states like Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas and Missouri reported using 100 percent transgenic cotton seeds while the likes of California and Texas used 71.3 and 89.9 percent of those seeds.
Of the various brands Deltapine made up for 41.5 percent of all cottonseeds planted in the US. Fibermax with 32.1 percent, Stoneville 14.2 percent and PhytoGen 4.1 percent accounted for the acreage.
Americot followed in fifth place with 2.7 percent, All-Tex in sixth place with1.8 percent and Dyna-Gro with 1.5 percent of all cotton seed plantings came in at eight place. PHY 800 Pima variety from PhytoGen was the most popular brand of Pima variety plantation and accounted for 66.9 percent of all Pima acreage.
