Shandong Province to harvest bumper cotton crop

Cotton cultivation area in Shandong Province this year is 14.20 million Mu (1 hectare=15 Mu), up 100,000 Mu over the previous year. With good conditions prevailing over the season, total cotton production is expected to be over 1,000,000 tons, according to the Cotton Association of Shandong Province.
Shandong is a major cotton producing province in China. Cotton planting area in Shandong has fluctuated between 12 to 15 million Mu since 2003, Shandong's cotton production is next only to that of Xinjiang province and is China's second largest cotton producing province.
In accordance with the plan of Shandong provincial government, the cotton cultivation area is expected to stabilize at 14 million Mu in the future and crop production is expected to stay steady at 1 million tons.
At present, Shandong's cotton production accounts for 1/7th of the national cotton output, consumption accounts for more than 1/3rd of China's cotton input while gap between production and consumption is about 300,000 tons and accounting for nearly 2/3rd of the country's shortfall in cotton.
