Recent report shows that cotton growers are not selling their produce as yet, because the prices are too low. Insiders reveal, at this time, last year, quality cotton could be sold at 6.20 yuan per kg and better quality cotton could priced at 6.40 yuan. Now sales price is only around 5.4 –5.6 yuan per kg.
Now, many cotton farmers are seriously considering moving to other crops. Calculations show that if cotton market price is less than 6 yuan per kg, income per mu will be 74 yuan lower than grain income.
Cotton yield per mu requires 30 laborers, 225.5 kg of seed cotton and earns around net income of 1053 yuan.
On the other hand, grain yield per mu requires 20 laborers and earns a net income at 1127 yuan per mu.
From the comparison planting grain is more cost-effective. Thus, experts predict that many cotton growers will shift to other crops for the 2009 season.
