Textile & clothing exports on road to achieving targets

According to statistics released by the Vietnamese MOIT, exports of Vietnam's textile and garment products stood at US $831 million in September 2008, down by 9.28% as compared to August 2008.
Exports fell across the board to major countries but increased to countries like Taiwan and Ukraine. Shipments to the main markets of the US could reach $469 million in the same month, a decline of 9.85 percent over the previous month but 23.53 higher than the same month of 2007.
Exports to the other key market of the European Union fell sharply by 20.96 percent to $125 million compared to August 2008 and increased 12.59 percent year-on-year. The same was repeated in case of exports to Japan, which witnessed a growth of 17.9 percent to touch $74.8 million in contrast to the corresponding period of 2007, but fell, by 8.74 percent when compared to August 2008.
Exports to other markets like Korea, Canada and the ASEAN fell by 10, 25 and 9.71 percent respectively in comparison to the previous month. The reverse in the above trend came from shipments to Taiwan. Export to this market was valued at $33.8 million, up 13.8 percent over August and 107 percent year-on-year.
On the other hand exports of textile and clothing to Ukraine grew handsomely to post a growth of 74.62 percent over August 2008 and 151 percent over September 2007. The textile and garment industry cumulatively exported goods worth $6.82 billion in the first nine months of 2008, up 20.24 percent over the same period of last year and was able to reach 72 percent of targeted export turnover for the year.
