Import of wool declines considerably

According to Customs Statistics in the period Jan-Sept 2008, China's wool imports touched 232,200 tons, a year-on-year decline of 10.8 percent, of which imports in the first quarter of 2008 were 77,200 tons, second quarter 87,000 tons and third quarter 68,000 tons.

In the same period, China's imports of raw wool reached 175,300 tons, a year-on-year decline of 14 percent; clean wool attained 34,200 tons, up 2 percent on year; wool top 14,700 tons, down 5.5 percent on year and imports of carbonized wool registered 3961 tons, a year-on-year drop of 32.5 percent.

Wool was mainly imported from Australia. In the period under preview, wool imports from Australia attained 128,500 tons, a year-on-year decline of 16.07 percent; New Zealand 32,700 tons, up 22.93 percent; Uruguay 18,200 tons, down 7 percent; Argentina 7989 tons and finally imports from South Africa stood at 7232 tons.

Imports in September alone came to 21,600 tons though up by 10 percent from the same month of 2007. Import volumes in the fourth quarter are expected to fall further.
