Once again, it is that time of the year when Kaaba will be draped in new kiswah. Reportedly, this ceremony is scheduled one day before the Dhul Hijjah 9 begins on November 30, 2008. This event is held every year during the Hajj month.
Kiswah, the black silk cloth that covers the Kaaba, is embroidered with 150 kilograms worth of gold, silver and silver gold blend threads depicting design patterns and quotes form Qur'an. The present cost of making the kiswah is over US $5.34 million or SR20 million. This cloth, in 47 pieces of 14 meters long and 101 cm broad, is 658 square metres long and is made of about 670 kilograms of pure silk.
More than 240 skilled craftsmen and artist work at the Kiswa factory, located in Makkah's Umm Al-Joud suburb, to complete unique creation with precision and timeliness, using, both, latest technology as well as ancient looms.
This exotic cloth is named one of the most distinctive examples of Islamic art.
