Impacted by a sharp demand drop of raw materials, Taiwan's textile industry has frequently reduced production capacity in the past few months. According to estimates of Taiwan Textile ITIS, Taiwan's total textile and garment industry output value realized NT 107.84 billion in the third quarter of this year, a decrease of 14.76 percent year-on-year, of which, value drop in garments and apparel goods was 3 percent, representing the biggest decline.

The steep decline in international prices of raw materials like chemical fibre in the third quarter has forced chemical fibre plants in Taiwan to completely close their plants or operate at lower capacities. There are reports of most polyester factories having reduced their production capacity by nearly 40-50 percent.

Taiwan textile ITIS estimates that output value of man-made fibre industry was NT 31.63 billion in the third quarter, representing a 8.73 percent decline over the same period last year; output value of the textile industry was NT 68.59 billion, a reduction of 11.22 percent and output value of clothing and apparel goods industry was NT 7.614 billion, showing a decline rate of 26.27 percent and which also has been depicting a downward trend since 2001.
