The ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts and heritage recently organised the four day State Batik and Weaving Promotion 2008, where the actual process of creating handicrafts was displayed to visitors. The visitors were enthralled by the view of the artisans producing items like rattan, batik, ceramic ware, embroidery and baskets right in front of them.

The purpose of this event was to showcase and promote the unique beauty and rich heritage of handicraft products amongst locals and foreigners alike. It was an only one of its kind experience for all to witness the actual process of producing the handicraft items.

There was also an interactive corner where the visitors were able to try their skills at batik painting. The fair also promoted other traditional crafts like wood carving, lantern making and weaving rattan baskets.

The main crowd was to be seen at stalls where batik artisans were displaying their skills. The visitors could see the artisans first laying a piece of fabric and then design outlines with molten resin and candles. According to the artisans the wax is used as a protection against dispersal of dyes to other areas within the fabric.

Once the outlining is done with, the designated areas are painted with and a silicate wash applied to bond the colours with the fabric. Finally the whole fabric is washed in boiling water to wash away the wax leaving a fabric with a hue of colours amidst white border outlines.
