Silk exports from Ningbo multifold in 2008

According to customs statistics of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, from January to November, silk exports from Ningbo port totaled 1,719,000 meters adding up to US $4.92 million, representing an increase of 1.4 times and 97.9 percent respectively, over the same period last year.

The average price of silk exports stood at $2862 per thousand meters, down 17.4 percent year-on-year. All the silk exports from Ningbo port were in general trade. Pakistan, ASEAN and the United Arab Emirates being the top three export markets, in importing 736,000 meters, 355,000 meters and 274,000 meters respectively.

Growth in these three major markets of Pakistan, ASEAN and UAE registered a massive increase of 13.1 times, 80.5 percent and 8.4 times respectively and together accounted for 79.4 percent of total silk exports from Ningbo in the first eleven months of 2008.

Private enterprises are the main bulwark of silk exports. These enterprises cumulatively exported 1,447,000 meters, an increase of 5.4 times year-on-year, accounting for 84.2 percent of total exports while state-owned and collective enterprises exported 124,000 meters and 3765 meters respectively, down 42.7 percent and 96.6 percent, respectively in the period under review.
