Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, one of the largest petrochemical firm of Japan, since December 30, has temporarily shut down its 450,000 ton per year ethylene production facility at the Mizushima plant, due to some mechanical problem.

Speaking exclusively to Fibre2fashion.com Company sources said, “This was an unplanned shutdown; today Mizushima officials have decided to repair a part of the facility. The restart is scheduled on January 14, 2009. Till now the unit was operating at around 70 percent of its capacity.”

The other two crackers in Kashima, with 375,000 and 476,000 tons per year capacities are currently operating at around 90 percent of their total capacity.

This unplanned closure happened when naphtha demand has sprang up in South Korea, as cracker operators raised runs to capitalize on renewed petrochemical demand in China.
