To this end recent meetings with WRAP and the Recovinyl recovery scheme organized in the UK by Axion Recycling have been beneficial in assessing the best logistics for collection and recycling of carpets along with other floorings. What does all this mean for specifiers of commercial carpets?

Manufacturers who are members of Carpet Recycling UK are committed to very clear strategies on improving their capabilities and product offerings with regard to the environment and sustainability. The ability to recycle carpets at the end of their life and extract raw materials from them is a vital part of this.

The ultimate goal is closed loop recycling where raw materials such as pile fibers could be extracted and returned to carpet use. On the waste hierarchy journey we can move forward out of landfill in stages, with energy recovery as a small step, fibrous material reuse as the next step, and carpet re-use where feasible as another step forward in lowering environmental impact.

It is the intention of Carpet Recycling UK to concentrate resources on opportunities which give the carpet industry value chain the fastest gains in improving environmental impact.
