Co-optex Handlooms to chalk export growth of 15%

Co-optex Handlooms, run and managed by the Tamil Nadu government, expects to increase its export turnover by 15 percent, through shipping of handloom textiles in the current fiscal (2008-09). This was revealed by the Mr Ramchandran, Minister of textiles and handlooms of the state.

In the last fiscal of 2007-08, the organization could chalk an export turnover of Rs 2,750 million. Along with increasing its turnover in overseas markets, Co-optex is also projected to increase its sales substantially in domestic markets from the Rs 8,750 million clocked in the previous fiscal.

Exports mainly constitute, bed sheets, napkins, home textiles and table spreads to overseas markets like, USA, Japan, EU and the countries of the Middle East. In the next fiscal, special attention would be given on production of low prices saris and chudidars, the minister, said.

Mr Ramchandran was inaugurating a special handloom expo, where he added by saying that the ministry had organised 26 exhibitions in all in the current fiscal and earned revenue of Rs 110.25 million from them. A national level textile expo is also planned to be held in Chennai, he said.
