Silk imports witness decline in H1 of current fiscal 2008-09

According to statistics available from the Central Silk board, the nodal agency for the silk trade in India, imports of silk in the first half of the current fiscal (2008-09) declined by 3.3 percent. The majority of imports were made from China, which dominates world trade in the product.
The value of silk fabric shipped in to Indian shores stood at US $98.60 million compared to $111.63 million in the comparable period of the previous fiscal. Imports of raw silk also fell to $98.88 million from $105.23 million in the same comparable period.
India imports the largest quantity of raw silk form China which amounted to 4,267 tons, Hong Kong 8 tons, Brazil 2 tons and 3 tons from other countries. Total quantity of silk in all forms imported from China has been growing with each passing year and has grown by 38 percent in fiscal 2007-08, compared to the previous fiscal.
Silk production in the country is estimated to touch 21,550 tonnes in 2008-09 corresponding to 18,320 tonnes in the previous fiscal.
