The National Government plans to initiate a campaign “Buy Nigerian goods” on the lines propagated by the US in its stimulus plan. The reason according to the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr Udenwa is to encourage the manufacturing sector in the country as well as save on scarce foreign exchange resources.
According to a press release issued by the ministry, the minister is quoted as saying that, “This is the only way for the economy to perform in an optimum way and the foreign exchange saved can be put to better use and urged Nigerian nationals and their leaders to come forward and start buying domestically manufactured goods”.
He added, “Rather than selling just oil and gas, we must now concentrate on selling value added goods in the form of finished products to other countries. He was contemptuous of the fakes of Nigerian textile and garment items and urged trade bodies to play an active role in checking the wrong practices of faking products.
