Thousands of handcraft artisans, manufacturers and traders held a day long strike in Agra, to protest against imposition of tax on handicraft products. The state has levied a tax of 4 percent on sales of the handicraft products.
Agra is famous, other than the Tajmahal, for, its leather, footwear and handicraft industry. From amongst the main handicraft items manufactured here are leather items and accessories, carpets, ethnic embroidery dresses and jardosi.
According to experts from the industry, this type of tax on handicrafts is not levied in any other part of the country and say that the state government should be rather supportive for the cause of the industry as it employs lakhs of skilled workers from rural areas.
