J&K Handicraft Corp officials partake in fake exhibitions

In the name of holding exhibitions in overseas markets, officials of the Jammu and Kashmir Handicrafts Corporation have siphoned off millions of rupees from the state exchequer. These false exhibitions were purportedly held in Atlanta and California in the US. This was revealed, when the state vigilance department registered cases against the officials alleging siphoning of money.
The, then Managing Director of J&K Handicrafts Corporation had in 2007, moved a proposal before the Development Commissioner Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles, New Delhi, seeking permission to take part in exhibitions in overseas markets to promote handicraft sales from the state, to which the Office of the Handicraft Commissioner, New Delhi provided the necessary permissions.
According to vigilance department, the concerned officials, without as much as steeping out of Indian soil, claimed Rs 2.4 million from the state exchequer, towards expenses incurred in participating in the US shows, which included false bills of lading and air tickets to claim the fraudulent amount. The idea behind participating in exhibitions is to promote handicrafts from the state like carpets, shawls etc.
