Dazian Fabrics creates dazzling backdrop at Academy Awards

Attendees and television viewers of the 81st Annual Academy Awards were amazed by the incredible design of the show this year, and a member of IFAI was at the center of it all. Many of the curtains, drapes and fabrics on stage were supplied by Dazian Fabrics, the premiere fabric supplier to the special event and entertainment industry. According to Marilyn Moss, head of fabrication and 10-year veteran of Dazian on the West Coast, the drapery designs were given to Dazian to create.
This year David Rockwell, Rockwell Group, was the first architect to get the job of designing the Oscar ceremony sets (which also included a non-fabric proscenium curtain made up of some 100,000 crystals and LED screens that moved to transform and reconfigure to fit the show's sequences). The Academy Awards office had not yet finished approving the photos of the stage, so they were unavailable to run with this story.
Dazian has worked on the Academy Awards ceremony over many years, wherever there is fabric on stage. Marilyn says that Dazian also has a huge rental business for television and movies, as well as designing specific orders for some films. "Our motto is: If you want it made and it's out of fabric, we'll do it!" she says with gusto.
That was certainly the case with this year's Academy Awards. "We had a lot of fun with this show with the big kabuki drop curtain made out of Taipei silk embellished with mirrors and Mylar disks," Marilyn continued. "The primary curtain was lapis black mirror organdy, and also had a silver-black metalure that went behind it to sparkle it up. Everyone in our workroom worked very hard to make the whole thing happen for the designers of the show. It was a great thrill!" she said.
