Country on way to missing cotton production targets once again

The country seems to have missed cotton production targets for the fourth consecutive year, was the unanimous opinion of the Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) and Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA).

Pakistan seems to have missed the 14.11 million bales target set by the government in last October by a wide margin of 2 million bales. Till March 1, 2009, Punjab produced 8.23 million bales while Sindh provided 2.98 million bales to get a tally of 11.2 million bales.

The textile sector might need to import the shortfall, if needed in the future, thereby leading to an outgo of precious foreign exchange and that too when the rupee has depreciated against the dollar in recent days.

Experts from the sector attribute the wrong assessment by the government to getting the ground realities wrong as well as not taking into confidence the real stakeholders, to arrive at a more realistic figure rather than falling short by such a huge margin.

They also point fingers at the spurious cotton seeds floating in the markets leading to lower yields and also the untimely rains, which could have affected the cotton crop to a great extent. They also blame the experts who carve policies for the sector.
