'Organic cotton a niche area for development' - Mr Sheth, CAI

According to the President of the Cotton Association of India (CAI), Mr Dhiren Sheth, India holds tremendous potential in organic cotton production. He said, growing demand has increased, world organic production to 225,000 tons in 2008-09.
He added by saying that, India is the largest producer of organic cotton by contributing more than 50 percent of the global production, though he said, organic cotton production in the country constitutes only 1.4 percent of overall cotton production.
He considers growing organic cotton a niche area for development and says, “The increasing awareness in western countries is gradually augmenting the demand for environmentally friendly products, which in turn is providing impetus to organic cotton”.
